What is a VPN?

A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, creates an encrypted tunnel between a device and a VPN server.

Internet traffic can then be routed through that server. Destination servers will normally see the public IP address of the VPN exit rather than the direct public IP address of the connection.

Encrypted tunnel The connection between the client and VPN server is protected.

Different exit IP Internet traffic leaves the VPN network through the selected server.

Public networks A VPN can provide an additional layer of protection on networks you do not control.

Server locations Different VPN exits make different geographical locations available.

What is WireGuard?

WireGuard is a modern VPN protocol with a comparatively small and straightforward technical design.

Access is commonly imported into a WireGuard-compatible application using a configuration file or QR code.

Typical setup

1. Install WireGuard
2. Receive a VPN configuration or QR code
3. Import the configuration
4. Activate the tunnel
5. Check the connection

VPN and privacy

A VPN is not a complete anonymity tool. Its primary purpose is to change the network path and protect the connection between the device and the VPN server.

Websites may still recognize users through account logins, cookies, browser characteristics or other identifiers.

What a VPN can do

It can hide the direct public connection IP from destination servers and transport traffic through an encrypted VPN tunnel.

What a VPN does not automatically prevent

Account logins, tracking cookies, browser fingerprinting, compromised devices and personal information voluntarily provided to services are not automatically eliminated by using a VPN.
